Private, public schools in Rivers comply with October 6, resumption

The Rivers State Ministry of Education says public and private schools in the State will re-open on Monday 6th October, 2014. The Permanent Secretary Ministry of Education Minabelem Michael West disclosed this to newsmen in Port Harcourt.

He said that the Ministry of Education decided to move the resumption date to 6th October after consultation with the State Ministry of Health, the National Union of Teachers (Rivers State Chapter) and the National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools (Rivers State Chapter).

The Permanent Secretary stated that the Ministry will do everything possible to ensure the safety of teachers and school children in the State rather than exposing them to possible dangers of contracting the disease.

“Although the Ministry of Health has informed the Ministry of Education that there are no new cases of Ebola in the State, they have nevertheless informed us that there are still persons in the State undergoing mandatory periods of surveillance to determine their Ebola status.

Given this situation, the State Ministry of Education considers it very necessary to do everything it can to ensure the safety of teachers and school children in the State rather than exposing them to possible danger of contracting the disease’’ he stated.

Minabelem Michael West also said that the State Government has also been most proactive in the fight against the disease and will continue to do its best, not only to provide necessary preventive materials in our public schools but to completely eradicate the disease in the State.

He also directed that proprietors of private schools in the State are expected to make similar provisions in their schools. He noted that the Ministry of Education, Rivers State has organized sensitization programme for teachers on the Ebola Virus Disease in line with the Federal Ministry of Education.
