KWASU Flays Poor Utilisation Of Tourism Centres

THE Vice Chancellor (VC) of Kwara State University (KWASU), Prof. AbdulRasheed Na’Allah, has described the ineptitude in handling cultural tourism in some parts of Nigeria as a wasteful approach to the gift of nature.
Citing the example of Thailand, a non-oil producing nation that has over the years transformed herself into a world economic giant through tourism, Na’Allah said when fully harnessed, Nigeria’s tourism sites would surpass that of Thailand.
He spoke yesterday at Malete during a press briefing to introduce KWASU School of Tourism, Hospitality and Events Management, (STHEM).
Na’Allah said: “We have recently sent two of our academic staff to Thailand to understudy what is making the country the very best in terms of tourism. Thailand, unlike Nigeria, has no oil. But through tourism, she has joined the league of developed countries of the world. Nigeria, when fully tapped has greater tourism locations to showcase to the world than what Thailand has.”
STHEM has already been accredited by the National Universities Commission (NUC), making the university as the only Nigerian university offering tourism as a course in the North Central Zone of  Nigeria.
The VC revealed that the university has employed a world-renowned professor of tourism, Prof. Peter Dieke, as the dean of the new school. Dieke, a Nigerian, had taught tourism in United Kingdom and he is being regarded as one of the world best scholars in the field. There are two other professors, supportive staff of the school and some adjunct professors in the relevant field.

The KWASU, according to the Vice Chancellor, has entered into an agreement with the state ministry of tourism to use the state, existing tourism centres in the state for practical. These include Esie National Museum, Owu Falls and Patigi Regatta among others.
According to Na’Allah, “the new school will respond to the needs to provide high-level, professional education in business administration. It is also designed to meet the growing need for the next generation of business leaders in the rapidly growing tourism, hospitality and events management industry.”
