Senate President, Senator David Mark, yesterday said the demands by the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) which recently called off its 10-month old strike was not selfish as he reiterated federal government's commitment to addressing the ills in the education sector.
Mark who made this remark while hosting leaders of ASUP, said the demands did not focus only on the welfare of teachers but also the provision of infrastructural development that could enhance learning in the polytechnics.
He said: "The demands of ASUP indicate that the union is not selfish. They are requesting for not only their welfare but infrastructural development that would promote learning in the polytechnics. I was delighted when I heard that the union gave room for the new minister of education to settle down and look into the demands. This shows some level of understanding.
"We must continue to dialogue. What we need is to resolve all the issues raised and bring back our students to classes. Polytechnic education is a unique form of education that no nation desirous of development can ignore."
Mark assured the lecturers that the Senate, under his leadership, would continue to do everything it can to ensure that normalcy returns to the polytechnics. "The Senate will continue to do the needful to bring back our students to classrooms and ensure normalcy returns to the sector."
Earlier, ASUP President, Dr. Chibuzo Asomuogha, commended the National Assembly for what it described as its effort to ensure the strike came to an end and lecturers returned to the classrooms.
He appealed to the Senate to prevail on the federal government to meet the demands of the union before the expiration of the three months' agreement preceding the suspension of the strike, promising that lecturers were always ready to put in their best to develop polytechnic education across the nation
