The University of Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, has warned its matriculating students against unwholesome social activities, urging them to bear in mind that their priority for being in the university is to study.
The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Comfort Ekpo,
who said this in Uyo on Thursday during the 21st matriculation ceremony
of the university, advised the students to abide by rules and
regulations of the institution to avoid problems.
“Beware of what social interaction you
are involved in. Please, do not be lured into any unlawful social group.
If you do, the university will have you expelled and your career
truncated. Report any act of intimidation or harassment early.
“Do not be intimidated by anybody. You do
not have to join any cult group to be ‘powerful.’ Be positive in your
decisions and make that difference that is expected of you,” she said.
The VC advised the matriculating students
to be present at religious centres, which are available in the campus.
She also urged them to be actively involved in any of the worship
centres, according to their faith.
Ekpo revealed that there had been cases
of students, who made excellent grades in the academics, but who had had
their certificates withheld for various reasons of impropriety or
misconduct.
He asked the students to shun all activities that would be detrimental to their stay as students in the institution.
“Set yourself a goal and dutifully pursue
it. As an institution, our goal is to produce graduates that can
compete favourably with other best graduates globally,” she stated.
She stated that the university had
obtained full accreditation status in 99.9 per cent in all its
programmes from the National Universities Commission and that it was
working hard to improve on the position.
She added that the university has rich compliments of academic and non-teaching staff in all faculties through collaboration with local and international institutions and corporate bodies to ensure that the staff and students have access to quality training and courseware.
She said that the university treated
every student as unique and important, except when the students acted
otherwise. She noted that the university encouraged strong work ethics
among staff and students.
