SINGAPORE: Education was one of the key issues raised by youths on Saturday (Aug 30) at a forum organised to get feedback on this year's National Day Rally. More than 120 youths and student leaders from the West Coast GRC and Pioneer Constituency participated in the wide-ranging discussion.
Topics covered included the importance of providing opportunities in education for all, recognition for the pioneer generation and development plans for Jurong Lake Park. The session was organised by West Coast GRC and Pioneer Constituency Youth Executive Committees and supported by the People's Association Youth Movement.
The youths were joined by Culture, Community and Youth Minister Mr Lawrence Wong, and grassroots advisers Mr Arthur Fong and Mr Cedric Foo. In a question-and-answer session, participants were reassured that a university education was not the only pathway to success. and that feedback from participants will be shared with the relevant agencies.
Mr Wong said: "We also want to build up a non-degree pathway, for those who have more applied, more technical skills, more practical skills. Then you ought to be able to succeed too and this is what the focus is this year. And that's why we talk about providing more options, helping the ITE and poly graduates to succeed.
He added that recently, the government had announced that there would "be more career counselling, more internship, more place and train programmes, more progression pathways for ITE and poly graduates".
