Proprietors mobilise against Ebola disease

The state chairman, National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools, Mr. Yomi Otubela, has urged private school proprietors in the state to step up the fight against Ebola Virus Disease in their respective schools. Otubela made this call during the sensitisation campaign against the disease on Thursday.

The campaign which featured health talks and demonstrations on how to attend to an indisposed pupils held at Victory Grammar School, Ikeja, Lagos. The programme witnessed a large turn out of school proprietors and pupils who protested the cancellation of summer schools and the postponement of resumption dates to October 13.

In his address, Otubela advised the Federal Government to take a holistic approach to ending the Ebola outbreak in the country. According to him, not much can be achieved if government does not look at other avenues through which the virus can be transmitted. He added that NAPPS member schools had bought temperature scanners and sanitisers for use in schools since the beginning of the outbreak.

“If pupils do not come to school, they will go to other places and mingle. It is important for government to look at other ways through which Ebola spread. Keeping pupils out of school in itself will not end Ebola,’’ he said.

The Special Adviser to Lagos State Governor on Public Health, Dr. Yewande Adeshina, however urged the proprietors to abide by the directive from the Federal Government as it will go a long way in ensuring the safety of staff and pupils. She also advised them to put measures in place in their schools to prevent the spread of the disease.
