‘Inadequate infrastructure challenges post-graduate studies’
A Professor of Science education at the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN), Kwara State, Olakanmi Abimbola has identified dearth of equipment, inadequate research and infrastructure as the challenges confronting postgraduate education in Nigeria. Inadequate supervisors as well as the shortage of funding for students to conduct research are also mentioned to be part of the challenges.
He made the submission recently at the institution while delivering a keynote address at the 47th meeting of the Committee of Deans of Postgraduate Schools in Nigerian Universities (CDPGS), themed “Implementation of BMAS for postgraduate Training in Nigeria Universities”.
He also noted that insufficient higher education institutions to maintain, expand infrastructure and strategic positioning of the doctoral schools are among the institutional challenges militating against post graduate programmes in the universities.
He therefore canvasses the establishment of doctoral schools in the universities to redefine doctoral programmes status adding that the Nigeria University system is mature enough to have many formally designated research universities beyond Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, the University of Ibadan, Ibadan and the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. He also advised that all faculties representing the different fields of study should establish Postgraduate Diploma programmes to accommodate interested and qualified Higher National Diploma holders in the Master degree programmes.
According to him, it will go a long way in assisting the Federal Government to solve the festering problem of the terminal nature of HND programmes and their implications for career progression for the holders of the Diploma.
