Strike, Not The Answer To Challenges Facing University Education---Funai VC

The Vice Chancellor of the Federal University, Ndufu – Alike, Ikwo, Professor Oye Ibidapo Obe says strike is not the answer to the several challenges facing universities in Nigeria.

Professor Ibidapo  Obe, who stated this during an interactive interview with the members of the Ebonyi State Correspondent’s Chapel of the Nigerian Union of Journalists, said that strike gives Nigeria University Education a bad image.

He said he believe in negotiation, talking to each other, to solve the problems in the campus, explaining that by so doing the larger society will be able to correct the wrong impression: “that all we do here is strike”.

He defined university as a universal property, and, thus advocated that the university authorities should use what they have to get what they need from the larger Nigerian society instead of embarking as strike action.

According to him, the initial challenge, as Vice Chancellor, was how to get the best brains to lecture at a rural based university. Today, having solved that problem, he has adopted growth system approach wherein, those academic staff that has master’s Degree can be asked to acquire their Ph.D. and thus, make enduring impact at FUNAI.

Another task, according to him, is to restore the confidence of the public in the Nigeria university education. To this end, he said: “we must work towards realizing this objective; we must concentrate and we must spend more time in research”.

On his expectation to the graduating students, he said: “I want our product to be our publicity. Every of our product must be employable and by the time they graduate, they to will have 6 jobs waiting for them”.

To realize his dream of having the best product, that can match with other universities in the country, he visited the Kagoshime University in Japan and signed a memorandum of understanding unbehalf of the university to collaborate on Space Science, wherein the students in the exchange problem, would enjoy exemption from the host university examination fee and normal tuition fees, among other benefits.

On the faith of the community where the university is sited, he said that compensation will be paid to them, adding: “we are going to bring in people, who they never thought would be here to come and do business”.
