Fashola and LASU fees
The sudden and panicky reduction of tuition fees of students of Lagos State University by Governor Babatunde Fashola has proved that leadership should be dynamic and policy conceptualisation and implementation should be in consonance with the aspirations of the people. What are the motives for increasing tuition fees by the state government from N25,000 to N250,000?
Was it informed by the need to improve academic infrastructure or profit? If the motive was to improve academic facilities, the increment ought to have been done progressively. Education like roads, provision of health facilities should be seen as social cost. Any government that seeks to profiteer by introducing high tuition fees in the disguise of improving education is bound to fail. The fear of failure obviously informed the recent reduction of tuition fees by some APC governors in the South-West. Governor Fashola has also shown leadership and great character by acceding to the demands and aspirations of the people. The Lagos State Government should also reflect on some of its policies and agents whose conducts in carrying out their statutory responsibilities are not in correlation with the primary objective for which they were established.
