Oyo debunks rumours on failure to pay WAEC fees

Oyo State Government has debunked rumours making the rounds that it has reneged on its promise to pay West African Examination Council (WAEC) fees for SSS III students.

The Commissioner for Education, Professor Solomon Olaniyonu, in a statement, said contrary to the speculations, government has paid N540, 410,400 in respect of this year’s WAEC.
The statement said: “Between 2011 and 2014, government had paid a total of N1.7 billion as WAEC fees. The sum of N339, 000,000 was paid in 2011 for 60,000 candidates, while N396, 548,000, N446, 227,600 and N540, 410,400 were paid for 76,786, 55,432 and 54,864 candidates as WAEC fees in 2012, 2013 and 2014 respectively.”
Olaniyonu directed all the public secondary school students who sat for the May/June 2014 WAEC in the state to access their results online.
He said Ajimobi-led administration “is a responsible government that cannot toy with education of its citizenry.”
The commissioner blamed the unfounded rumours on the opposition which he said were out to politicise virtually everything done by the incumbent administration.
