NGO prepares pupils for computer-based testing

A non-governmental organisation, Truth for Change Initiative, has said its free holiday classes are to bridge the gaps between the pupils in rural communities and those in urban centres.

The group’s Project Coordinator, Mrs. Susan Uko-Abasi, stated this at Ikot Emem, Ikot Ekpene Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State on Wednesday.

The NGO, she said, was organising the programme to further equip the beneficiaries with knowledge that would prepare them for future life challenges.

Uko-Abasi, who also frowned on the high level of illiteracy in the rural communities, said there was the need to check the trend.

She said, “I am from this community and have seen that the level of illiteracy is very high. If well-meaning Nigerians do not get up to give a helping hand to youths, there is the tendency that they will grow to hate the large society and be violent.

“That is why every holiday, we organise programmes to channel their energy towards the productive course of life.”

Stressing the need for computer education, she urged pupils, especially those seeking admission to higher schools, to embrace the information and communication technology.

She added, “No matter how educated you are now and you are not computer literate, you are almost an illiterate as torrents of things are conducted through information and communication technology.”

Uko-Abasi, however, thanked Data Science Limited and the New Horizons Software Limited for presenting some new computers to the NGO for the promotion of education in rural communities.

The centre instructor, Dumnoi Endurance, advised the participants to take the programme seriously, stating that it would help them in e-examinations as well as other in other spheres of life. One of the beneficiaries and pupil of Secondary Commercial School, Ikot Ekpene, Ifreke Udom, said she was grateful to the NGO for giving her an opportunity to be conversant with modern trend in education
