Firm inaugurates learning device for pupils

Hitachi Solution, West Africa has inaugurated Profiler, a 45-minute cognitive test, to detect and correct learning challenges among pupils in Nigerian schools.

The Managing Director, GreenCircle Network Africa, a subsidiary of Hitachi Solution, West Africa, Mr. Ladipo Oke, stated this at briefing in Lagos.

Oke explained that the current approach to learning in the country without an initial diagnosis of the competency of the pupils was one of the factors responsible for mass failure in external examinations.

The device, he said, would help teachers to determine any developmental challenges in pupils and proffer unique solutions.

He said, “A pupil comes to the classroom and you start teaching him without knowing his or her core skill capacity. The Profiler ensures that teachers and parents know the areas of strengths and deficiencies of their children and pupils. The teachers also through the device know how to identify and isolate the pupils’ problems.

“The formative career path of a child starts from secondary schools. Nothing kills the self-esteem of any pupil faster than failing a subject through no fault of his. We are all talented in various aspects and we do not all have to flow in one direction”

Oke, while giving insight into the initiative, noted that the firm would collaborate with four states in line with the Hitachi Solution Regional Partnership on Education.

According to him, Cambridge University and the Hitachi Group are set to establish virtual learning centers in four regions in the country.

The centres, which would attract N1.5bn financial assistance from the Hitachi Group, he added, would target public schools and improve the quality of teaching in the country.

He explained, “We all know that a bad teacher produces a bad set of pupils. We believe that technology has become a part of our everyday life. We want to create global classrooms where the classes would be fitted with multimedia interactive boards. The idea is to localise the technology whereby our pupils can have access to live transmission to Cambridge University, one of the best universities in the world.”

Commending the Michael Okpara University, Umudike, Abia State, for having the highest number of global classrooms in the country, Oke said once a university or school is able to deploy a minimum of 100 global classrooms, it automatically qualifies as a virtual learning centre with access to grants from the Hitachi group. The Local Organising Committee Project Officer, Ms. Abike Oluderu, said the selection of the states would be competitive
