Brace up for leadership role, Fashola tells LASU students

Lagos State Governor Babatunde Fashola (SAN) yesterday urged students union executives to aspire to become future leaders. The governor who made the appeal while hosting the representatives of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) at the Lagos House, Ikeja, urged students’ leadership to use unionism as a platform and an opportunity to prepare themselves for leadership role that awaits them.

The governor told his visitors that their actions and inactions as students’ leaders would define their perception of leadership in the near future. While calling on the students’ body to change its style of agitation, Fashola pledged to always pursue policies that would enhance the standard of education.

“We are trying to give you the opportunity that we didn’t have. The opportunity to participate in the decisions that affect your life. These are some of the processes that we decided to take in order to prepare you for future leadership. We did not just wake up one day and decided to increase the tuition fees in LASU but you, the students, who protested to the House of Assembly to complain over the state of infrastructure in the school. And based on your complaints, we acted accordingly.

“Part of the recommendation by the visitation panel was that the tuition of the school should be increased for its the progress.”

Fashola, who also got a certificate of commendation from NANS over his decision to revert to the old tuition being paid in the state-owned university, promised to liaise with his Ogun State counterpart, Ibikunle Amosun to resolve the face-off between him and students of Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU). Earlier, leader of the delegation, Yakubu Eletu, appealed to the governor to ensure the release of some LASU students arrested during the protests against hike in school fees. He said: “Some of the students have been asked to face the Senate because they protested over the increase in tuition fees and some are being denied the opportunity to go for their NYSC because the school’s management withheld their call-up letters. We want the governor to prevail on the Vice Chancellor to sheath his sword and allow the students who want to go for NYSC to do so.
