Feyikemi beckons pupils to Yoruba summer class
Mothers Support Mother Tongue, a non-governmental cultural organisation established by actress and broadcaster, Feyikemi Bodunrin-Olayinka, has initiated a Yoruba summer class for pupils in Lagos.
The programme that started on Monday is holding at the Agidigbi Primary School, Ikeja, with Olayinka saying that it is free.
According to her, the programme featuring Yoruba scholars and culture promoters, who teach the participants different aspects of the language and culture, aims at bridging the gap created by modernisation.
She notes in an interview that Mothers Support Mother Tongue will not leave any stone unturned in its efforts to arrest the cultural alienation that many children and youths are being made to suffer.
The co-presenter of morning-ride programme, Owuro Lawa, on LTV, who came into the limelight when she acted Asake in Tunde Kelani’s film, O Le Ku, says, “When Mothers Support Mother Tongue was being inaugurated last year, we promised all stakeholders that we will work hard to bring up our children in the way of culture. The summer class is part of the fulfillment of this. And I am very happy that many parents have heeded our call as we have been having up to 100 pupils per day.
“We teach the pupils different aspects of the language. We teach them Yoruba proverbs, songs and other aspects of our culture. Our hope is that by the time the programme will end on Friday, we will have inspired the young ones to seek more knowledge about their cultural heritage. Mothers Support Mother Tongue say no to the relegation of our culture and tradition to the background. We say no to a future of cultural bastards.”
While practitioners that include Abayomi Fadeyi and Akindolapo Abodunrin are among those who have treated different topics, kid, aka Yoruba poet, Omowunmi Asake Jojolo Akewi, has thrilled her peers with poetry.
