FUNAAB VC seeks better employment policy for youths
The Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, Ogun State, Prof. Olusola Oyewole, has called for a more comprehensive employment policy for Nigerian youths.
The call, he said, had become imperative considering the challenges that youths were facing in the country.
The VC spoke at a workshop organised by the Agricultural Media Resources and Extension Centre of the university.
The title of the workshop was Enterprise Start-Up Fact Finder Initiativesfor Successful Enterprise Development.
Represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academic, Prof. Adekojo Waheed, the VC, who hailed AMREC for organising the workshop, said a better employment framework would help youths to overcome the high-level unemployment in the country.
Pointing to a recent study by the Federal Ministry for Youth Development, which showed that about 67 million Nigerian youths were unemployed, Oyewole urged relevant stakeholders to help and check the mortgaging the future of youths.
The VC also canvassed a better curriculum that would equip youths with diversified knowledge, skills as well as entrepreneurship and vocational education.
He urged youths to exploit the opportunity provided by the AMREC workshop and to liaise with the FUNAAB’s Centre for Entrepreneurial Studies to have a good mastery of their vocations.
The VC identified such vocations as tufting, liquid soap production, beads and wire works, fashion designing, value-added fish processing, among others.
The Chairman of the seminar series and former Dean, College of Veterinary Medicine, Prof. Babatunde Otesile, described the theme of the lecture as apt.
The Dean of COLNAS, Prof. Tope Popoola, said the seminar was an integral part of the college aimed at sharing research experiences and findings.
Meanwhile, the Directorate of Technologists and Technical Staff, in collaboration with the Centre for Innovation and Strategy in Learning and Teaching and the Information and Communication Technology Resource Centre, also held a Digital Appreciation workshop for Laboratory Scientists and Technologists in the university.
The theme of the workshop was Effective Use of Internet and Modern Learning Technologies.
In his presentation titled Philosophy, Aims and Objectives of the Training, the Head of CISLT, Dr. Olusegun Folorunso, urged members of the community to embrace the use of modern technology.
He also urged them to use the new FUNAAB e-mail address.
Earlier, the Acting Head of DITTECS, Mr. Sola Rufai, re-stated the mission of the directorate, saying it was to improve the laboratory status of such disciplines as Agriculture, Engineering, and Science.
Rufai said the training would enhance on-the-job performance of participants, noting that it would enable them to compete favourably with their counterparts globally.
