Nigeria among beneficiaries of UK scholarship programme

An education-consulting group, Knowledge Development Opportunities Inspire Nigeria, says Nigeria is one of the countries to benefit from student scholarship under the Scholarship UK programme.

Other beneficiary countries, the group said, are Russia, Belarus, Cyprus, Malaysia and China.

The KDO Inspire Nigeria Business Development Manager, Mrs. Olanike Fadahunsi, stated this while speaking with journalists in Lagos.

According to her, the initiative will encourage Nigerians to get training from more advanced countries in the hope of applying the advanced technologies and methodologies they learnt from foreign countries on return to Nigeria.

She said the scholarship initiative was possible following support from many organisations across the world.

She said, “Scholarship UK is a programme organised by several partner universities and education consultancies around the world. Although initially intended to provide scholarships and tuitions waivers for UK universities, the programme has opened up to other countries and the list keeps growing.

“Governments are also getting involved and sponsoring indigenes of their states. Recently, the Enterprise Bank started offering loans which cover the portion of fees not covered by the waiver to make things even more convenient for parents and guardians.

“The benefits cannot be quantified when our graduates return from foreign countries and begin to apply the expertise they have gained over their course of study. Parents are proud because employers seem to show favouritism to these graduates.”

The group, while decrying information in the country, noted that the development had robbed many Nigerians of the opportunity to study overseas.

She said,“Opportunities cannot be seized unless one is aware of them. Regardless of our area of interest, we ought to put our ears to the ground, get informed. Do not make conclusions without investigating and asking questions. Only then do we stand to benefit from the numerous opportunities out there waiting to be seized.

“Several people believe that studying abroad is for an elite few and would cost a fortune. So many have limited their options and settled for less than they truly desire, because they assume it is a distant dream, which is beyond reach. It is interesting to discover that with the advent of several private universities all over Nigeria, many of these cost several times more than some of the options available for studying abroad.”
