Don’t politicise teachers recruitment –ASUSS president
The President, Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools in Ogun State, Mr. Tunde Folarin, has warned against the politicisation of the recruitment of teachers in the country.
He made the appeal on Wednesday in Abeokuta while declaring open a workshop for secondary school teachers in the state.
A situation whereby politicians compile names and recommend prospective teachers, he noted, would only further worsen the crisis in the nation’s education sector.
He said, “Politicising the recruitment of teachers at this level will only lead to crises. Somebody that is not educated along teaching line cannot teach well, it is something that we all know.
Folarin also frowned on the inadequacy of teachers in many of the nation’s schools, stressing that it was absurd for a teacher to have about 150 pupils in a class.
According to him, a teacher with such a large number of pupils cannot be effective in his teaching and monitoring.
Canvassing a remedy for this in Ogun State, Folarin said there was the need for the government to have a five-year strategic plan that would also address the infrastructure and the manpower challenges in the state.
He also called for homegrown curricula in the running of schools in the country.
He said, “The policy summersault on education by the government has not really helped the nation’s educational sector.
“If anything works in the United States of America or the United Kingdom, that does not mean it will work here. We need to develop a home-grown curriculum to address the challenges in our educational system.”
The chairman of the state Service Commission, Mrs. Olubukola Onabanjo, said the workshop was to strengthen the capacity of secondary school teachers in the state.
