Ebola: ICAN Adopts Measures to Protect Conference Participants



As panic heightens over the outbreak of Ebola virus in some West African countries including Nigeria, the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) said it has taken measures to protect its members and other participants in its forthcoming 44th annual accountants’ conference.

The event holds in Abuja between September 8th and 12th, 2014.
A statement from ICAN explained that some of the measures put in place include the provision of hand sanitiser and gloves in each delegate’s conference bag and the provision of body scanners at the venue.

The Institute also said it is in contact with the Federal Ministry of Health, National Agency for Food, Drug Administration and Control, (NAFDAC) and National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to provide ambulances and other emergency services throughout the period of the conference.

Furthermore, it said arrangements have also been made for doctors and nurses to be on ground at the conference while adequate security arrangement has been made with relevant security agencies to screen delegates and visitors at various hotels and conference venue.

President of the International Federation of Accountants (IFAC), Mr. Warren Allen, Director of Core Operations Services for World Bank, Dr. Ed Olowookere and other eminent personalities both within and outside the country would grace the conference tagged: “Protecting Public Interest: Enhancing Professionalism”.

The IFAC President is expected to present the lead paper titled “Chartered Accountants and the Society: The Realities of Serving the Public Interest” while the President of the Institute Mr. Chidi Ajaegbu would deliver the keynote address to about 4500 Chartered Accountants expected at the conference.

Apart from the lead and plenary session papers, several other papers to be discussed by eminent resource persons at the conference include: “Professional Accountants: Adding Value through Financial Reporting System”, “Standards for the Protection of Public Interest and the Performance of Supervisory Institutions”, “The Imperative of Corporate Governance in the Protection of Public Interest”, “Value Re-Orientation: Key Issue for National Development and the Role of the Accounting Profession”, as well as “Sustaining Ethical Standards in the Accountancy Profession” .

Other eminent resource persons expected at the conference include: former Managing Partner, PriceWaterhouseCoopers, Mr Ken Igbokwe; the Chairman of Guinness Nigeria Plc, Mr. Babatunde Salvage, Regional/Managing Partner (WA) of Ernst & Young, Mr. Henry Egbiki, Dr. Vincent Onodugo of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Chief Mike Ozekhome, Mrs. Ifueko Omoigui-Okauru.

ICAN was established by Act of Parliament Number 15 of 1965. ICAN is also empowered to set standards of knowledge and skills to be attained by persons seeking to become members of the accountancy profession in Nigeria. The Institute has more than 39,000 members and 120,000 students on its registers and conducts professional examinations twice in a year.
