Nigeria needs creative pupils for transformation –Dons

The Head, Department of Economics, University of Lagos, Prof. Ndubisi Nwokoma, and the Coordinator of Chrisland Pre-Degree College, Mrs. Atinuke Agomoh, have identified poor creative skills among pupils as one of the factors slowing the pace of Nigeria’s transformation.

They spoke at the 2013/2014 Valedictory Service and Prize-Giving Day of the college in Lagos.

During the ceremony, which saw outstanding students honoured, the dons identified creativity as a key factor for the country’s development.

They added that creative pupils were needed for the country to make impact on the global stage.

According to Nwokoma, who was the guest speaker, many pupils no longer strive to develop their creative skills but waste time engaging in social activities.

This, he said, contributed to the slow pace at which Nigeria develops technologically, when compared to other western nations.

He said, “As pupils, you must explore and develop your creative skills and flow with the current trend in Information Communication Technology. Using your time judiciously will not only help your personal development, it will also enhance Nigeria’s transformation. You must realise that a nation can hardly grow without creative students. But what we see in our universities today is that students gain admission with good grades and they suddenly drop academically in their part two, three and four.

Also, Agomoh challenged the graduating pupils to rewrite history by showcasing their talent, skills, and knowledge. She said, “Notably, to stand out in this dispensation, one should make an effort to do things differently as opposed to the usual and conventional way of getting things done. Records can only be broken when new records have been set
