Group campaigns against Ebola in schools

The World Organisation for Early Childhood Education has begun a campaign against the eradication of Ebola Virus Disease in schools, as part of its annual Global Handwashing Day.

The title of this year’s event is ‘Wash from the Start’.

In Ibadan, Oyo State, the programme held at the Subuola Memorial Nursery and Primary School on Wednesday, where the group’s Vice-President, Africa, Mrs. Abimbola Are, urged parents to embrace proper childhood education.

She called on parents to ensure that their children lead a health life, saying it was an elixir for guaranteeing a healthy nation.

Are, who owns the Ajoke International School, Jericho, Ibadan, noted that the campaign was to train pupils on how to appreciate the need for proper hygiene.

She said, “With the Ebola Virus Disease in Nigeria, it is important to initiate a campaign among all Nigerian children that will help eradicate the disease completely in our society.

“These innocent children play with sand, water and leaves. They touch them naturally and it is our belief that they are vulnerable to this dreaded EVD.

“We want to protect them, using them as tool for their own safety. We want to inculcate cleanliness into their way of life so that they can live their cherished dreams in the future. When our children finish playing or leave the restroom, we should encourage them to wash their hands with soap and water properly. It is a good way of stopping the Ebola virus. Though Ebola is under control in Nigeria, we must not rest on our oars. We must embrace permanent healthy living standard.”

Meanwhile, of the 10 schools that participated in the programme, the Little Angel Child Care took the first position. The Methodist Primary School, Bodija, came second; while the American Christian Home School came third.
