Nda-Isaiah Congratulates Gowon, Says It’s Time to Reform NYSC

Founder of Leadership Newspapers and Presidential aspirant on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Mr. Sam Nda-Isaiah, said Gen. Yakubu Gowon had been a blessing to Nigeria and that his efforts at ensuring the nation’s healing after the civil war was the reason the nation was able to embark on a gradual recovery and prevent a reoccurrence of the civil war.

Nda-Isaiah also called for the reform of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) which was established by the administration of the former Head of State.

He said the NYSC had over the years served its purpose and it now needs to be reformed to meet with our current challenges.

According to him, unemployment and insecurity are among the biggest issues on the front burner today and “the NYSC should be utilised in finding solutions to these problems.

The presidential aspirant called for the reform of the NYSC into a two year compulsory Military service programme for all graduates to enable the nation fortify its national security and increase Nigeria’s defence and readiness for war.

He said figures emerging from the current security situation has put the numerical strength of Nigeria’s military personnel at a little over 300,000 which is totally inadequate to protect a country as big as Nigeria. Mr. Sam Nda-Isaiah said with our population, we should have one of the largest and most professional armed forces in the world.

Alternatively, he said the NYSC can be used to create an army of graduate business owners and entrepreneurs who will create Jobs instead of being job seekers.

He said the NYSC programme can be reformed to provide business management and entrepreneurial training for the thousands of Nigerian graduates who have commercially viable business plans that can be assisted with funding amidst strict monitoring.

“The ripple effect is that Nigeria will reap bountifully through the growth of the economy, a rapid reduction in unemployment and an increase in the living standards of ordinary Nigerians.”
Nda-Isaiah also said Nigeria would be eternally grateful to Gowon for making sure that the nation remained one despite the unfortunate civil war we had to go through.

Gowon was recently honoured by the Leadership Newspapers as Person of the Year 2013, when he turned 80 years old on October 19, 2014.
