Muslim students develop mobile health apps

Muslim students at the University of Lagos have developed an application that reveals locations and contacts of health centres and general hospitals in Lagos.

The application, according to the head of its development team, Mr. Yusuf Jimoh, also features theological views on health, information on some dangerous viruses, first aid corner, health news, quick telephone and email contacts, among others.

The application, available on Google store, was introduced to mark the Dawah Week 1435, which was themed, ‘Reliving the Golden Age’.

Jimoh, a 300-level student of Physics /Electronics, said, “It has information about deadly viruses and how to prevent them. It has first aid corner, which summarises instructions on first aid. It also has email and phone contacts to report health issue and to communicate with our doctors. There is also Google map integration with clear address to help general hospitals in Lagos and their addresses and phone numbers.”

He said, “The application, which is available on Google Play, has a fascinating tab on theological views on health. The prospects of the application include the ability to reduce health problem. It is a platform for health education.”

The President of the Muslim Students Society of Nigeria, UNILAG branch, Mr. Mu’Sodiq Farouq, said the application was developed to show the prowess of students in Information Technology.

Farouq, who is a 400-level Electrical Electronics Engineering student, also stated that the Nigerian youths, if given the opportunity and right environment, would return the country to its pride of place among African nations.

He said, “Earlier, the Muslim youths were the forerunners in science and technology and they opened the gate for the renaissance of science and technological civilisation in the world. It is with this spirit that UNILAG-MSSN wishes to solve one of the world’s challenges with ICT and this time we have chosen health.”

He added, “The application is standard and can compete favourably with its contemporaries. Our team is headed by a student who is a Microsoft certified technology specialist; nominee, best use of technology of the 2009 Nigeria Future Award; and the winner of Innovator of the year by Under-30 Achievers Award.”
