SAN decries frequent strikes by varsities, others

A legal luminary, Malam Yusuf Ali, SAN, has lamented the instability of the academic calendar of Nigerian institutions which, he noted, has eroded the credibility of their certificates.

To address this lingering issue, he said the state and federal governments that have tertiary education institutions and other stakeholders should find a common ground in order to ensure a stable, progressive and workable academic calendar in the country’s tertiary institutions.
Speaking at the fourth convocation ceremony of Al-Hikmah University, Ilorin where 658 students including 16 first class graduands were graduated, Ali who was given an honorary doctorate degree in Public Administration said the distinguishing factor between Nigerian universities and other universities in the world is the stability of academic calendar.
The lawyer called on well-meaning Nigerians to emulate the founder of Al-Hikmah, Chief Raimi Oladimeji, by establishing more world-class private universities to address the acute shortage of spaces for qualified students.
Vice Chancellor of the university, Professor Sulyman Abdulkareem, disclosed that the university has been waxing stronger, saying the institution’s Law and postgraduate programmes would commence in the 2014/2015 session.
