WAEC: Opposition blames govt over students’ failure

The Socialist Party of Nigeria (SPN) has blamed Oyo State Governments for the poor performance of students in the state in the just concluded West African Examination Council (WAEC).
SPN was reacting to the recent claims by the state government that students were responsible for their failure in the 2014 WAEC exams.
A statement signed by the party’s Secretary, Bamigboye Abiodun, said contrary to government’s claims, education was grossly underfunded in the state, and hence government is to be blamed for the poor performance of students in the recent WAEC examination.
“It is quite unfair to blame students for the poor performance especially under the prevailing situation where schools in the state are bedevilled with serious infrastructural decay;  lack of development programmes for staff; lack of adequate facilities for proper teaching and learning.
“A single classroom is accommodating about 100-140 students and on the average a teacher in the state is responsible for a minimum of six classes across various levels. Under this ugly circumstance, it will be difficult for a teacher to carry out proper students monitoring through assignment, tests, and other forms of continuous assessment,” said the statement.
It added that the situation has also been compounded by poor salaries, saying that government is yet to implement the N18,000 minimum wage signed into law since March 25, 2011.
He urged teachers to reactivate the agitations for full implementation of N18,000 minimum wage, instead of the 10-30% pay rise recently announced by the APC-led government in the state.
Commissioner for Education, Professor Solomon Olaniyonu, had placed the blame of the bad result on the poor attitude of pupils to study while urging both teachers and parents to play their roles in justifying the expenditure of the state on education.
