NYSC passing out parade put off again

The 2013/2014 Batch ‘C’ National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members in the Federal Capital Territory yesterday collected their discharge certificates at designated locations across the territory without the usual passing out parade and other ceremonies.

No announcement was made officially of the reasons for the suspension of ceremonies, but Daily Trust reports that this was not the first time the passing out parade would be put off.
The event, which corps members always looked forward to, has been downplayed for some years now, especially at the wake of the insurgency.
Corps members have not been happy about this.
Some of the corps members who spoke to City News at the NYSC orientation camp at Kubwa argued that as wise as the decision to downplay the event was, the inability of government to find a lasting solution to the lingering crises was unfortunate.
“For how long will Boko Haram continue to hold us to ransom? Look at how we are doing our passing out, a day we all look forward to converge again after the orientation camp, at least meet our old folks again after a long time,” corps member Oche Paul said.
Those transacting businesses in the camp were also not left out in the lamentations as they complained of abysmal sales.
Reacting, Assistant Director, Public Relation Unit, Lucie-Ann Laha, said the decision to have a low-key celebration was in the best interest of all stakeholders, including the corps members and their parents.
She said the corps members were directed to go to designated locations across the territory for the collection of their discharge certificates in an exercise monitored by the management to ensure peace.
