Lecturers protest non-payment of pension entitlements

No fewer than 100 lecturers of the Adeniran Ogunsanya College of Education,Ijanikin, on Monday staged a protest at the Government House, Alausa, against what they said was failure of the Lagos State Government to remit over 17 months deducted funds to their pension accounts and non-payment of retirees benefits for three years .

The lecturers, who carried placards with various inscriptions, such as “Fashola pay us our pension arrears “, “Is it a sin to be lecturers ?” also protested alleged non-payment of 18 months salary arrears and non-remittance of over N150m in deducted co-operative funds to their accounts, News Agency of Nigeria reports.

They said their grievances with the government also included poor funding of the institution, structural defect of the newly inaugurated College of Health Centre and attempt to reverse the retirement age from 65 years to 60 years.

The Chairman of the Joint Action Front, Mr Abiodun Aremu, who co-ordinated the protest, said it was not right for the government to ask lecturers to work without paying their entitlements.

Aremu also decried what he called the misappropriation of the lecturers co-operative funds and non- remittance of pension funds, saying the problem smacked of lack of transparency on the part of government.

“Lecturers and indeed all Nigerian workers deserve a living wage. It is unfortunate that deductions from people’s salaries have now become subjects of misappropriations. This is not acceptable and the money must get back to the lecturers “ he said.

Aremu urged Governor Babatunde Fashola to borrow a cue from his Imo State counterpart, Gov Rochas Okorocha ,and use part of his security votes to improve education in the state.

NAN reports that representatives of the institutions, joint staff unions had on October 10 deliberated on some of the issues raised by the lecturers.
