Incompetence of teachers in public schools

Education is fundamental to the development of every nation. To this end, primary and secondary education is considered basic in laying the foundation for education development of nations. Unfortunately, in Nigeria, the progress of education is always hindered by teacher’s incompetence at these basic levels. With mostly incompetent teachers manning our public schools, there is no way pupils can achieve the purpose of their going to schools-acquiring both knowledge and good morals.
Even though students used to write examinations at the end of every academic term, how can a teacher who could not read or impart knowledge and good morals on the students, assess the performances of pupils?
Many parents prefer to enrol their child in private schools, despite the charges. They do so because of the difference in terms of teaching and teachers. Teachers in private school work hard to ensure that they impart knowledge and good morals on the student they teach, unlike their counterparts in public schools.
Teacher’s incompetence is a serious issue that poses threat to not just the student’s future and education development, but also to the development of the nation at large. Government should, as a matter of urgency, intervene by employing teachers who are ready, willing and competent to impart knowledge and good morals on students. This will help in grooming knowledgeable and sound leaders of tomorrow.
