Nigeria at 54: Standard of education, employment still undesirable – Muslim Students
As Nigeria clocks 54, the Muslim Students of Nigeria, Lagos State Area Unit has scored governments at all levels low on education, fight against corruption and insecurity.
The group in a statement signed by its President, Kaamil Kalejaiye, also expressed displeasure over the rate of unemployment and disrespect for law.
Kalajaiye, who prayed for Nigeria’s development, noted that there was need for God’s intervention in the activities of country.
He said, “It is important to say that it is only with God’s intervention that Nigeria shall grow desirably, but characters exhibited by our leaders are not in anyway encouraging especially in the area of education. Nigerian leaders are obviously the bane of students and educational development. 54 years after independence, our academic institutions still go on strike more than holidays.
“The mass failure in the just concluded West Africa Examination Council (WAEC) is just one of the numerous things to show for our failing educational system. Other countries advanced because their leaders see positions as a calling and national duty not as a means to enrich themselves and their families.
“It will not be too wrong for anyone to say that Nigeria is still in the phase of post-colonialism and not independence. There is nothing positive to show that it is better to be independent up till now.
Our youths are still out there looking for jobs. Those that have decided to create jobs for themselves are not allowed to succeed through elistic and un-progressive government policies. Our leaders must wake up to their duties and work for the country’s future and not their pocket, religion, political party or tribe.”
Apart from education, Kalejaiye also said government at all levels must step up efforts on anti-graft war and insecurity.
According to him, the manner at which government cover religious leaders on corrupt cases and other malpractices won’t make the country grow.
“Reactions of Federal Government to many corruption cases show that it was not ready for growth and for any nation to grow, it must be principled in the application of its laws. We must allow all religions the freedom they deserve.
