TASUED’s VC seeks regular training for teachers
The Vice-Chancellor of Tai Solarin University of Education, Prof. Oluyemisi Obilade, says for pupils’ performance in public examinations to improve, there is the need to organise regular training for teachers.
Obilade said this in a lecture she delivered in Osogbo, Osun State on Tuesday at the Skye Bank Literacy Day.
She said it was good to build good schools but added that without competent teachers, their pupils will be poorly equipped academically.
Obilade said, “Teachers should be trained and retrained. This should be done regularly. If teachers who are key factors in schools are left out, then we should not expect that pupils would perform very well.
“If you don’t train and retrain teachers, education will continue to be comatose; students will continue to fail woefully and development may not be possible.”
Stressing the importance of education in the life of a nation, Obilade, who said some businesses also collapsed because of lack of education of their founders, said learning should be supported by every lover of development.
She said, “A nation with a large number of uneducated citizens cannot develop. Education is the foundation for development.
“There can’t be remarkable improvement in change in attitudinal behaviour of the people without education. Education is an effective instrument for positive change.
“The menace of the Boko Haram is as a result of failure of our nation in the area of education.”
Obilade, who said some lecturers were still unable to use computer, said government should promote computer literacy because of its advantages.
The VC lauded the education policy of Governor Rauf Aregbesola, saying conducive environment for learning would have positive impact on education in the state.
The Regional Manager of Skye Bank, Mr. Ayoyemi Dairo, urged pupils to make good use of opportunities they had to better their lives.
Also, the chairman of the planning committee of the event, Mrs. Riyike Arikawe, urged pupils to face their studies and shun vices which could truncate their ambitions.
