VC, NACONS canvass more funding for education
The Vice-Chancellor, University of Ilorin, Kwara State, Prof. Abdulganiyu Ambali, has called on the Federal Government to work towards attaining the UNESCO’s 26 per cent annual budget recommendation for education.
Ambali noted that adequate funding of education would greatly assist in national development.
He spoke on Monday in Ilorin on the sidelines of a ceremony to celebrate his second year anniversary as the VC.
He said, “The funding of education should be in tandem with the UNESCO prescription. No nation can be worthy of its name without paying proper attention to education. It is easier to lead educated people than to lead ignorant people. The more we invest in education, the better for all of because we will all be the beneficiaries of that effort.”
Meanwhile, the President, National Congress of Nigerian Students, Mr. Abdulfatah Abdulsalam, has said that the congress was opposed to payment of N4, 000 by prospective corps members to obtain their posting.
The student leader, who spoke at a briefing in Ilorin, also appealed to the National Youth Service Corps authorities to increase the monthly allowance of corps members to N30,000 per month.
Abdulsalam said, “We do not deserve exploitation and extortion as students. Considering the rate of poverty and unemployment in the country, any form of extortion such as the N4,000 will be opposed with all youthful and intellectual strength.
“Certainly, this abnormality is a reflection of the bad governance we experience at all levels. It is also abysmal, the manner in which the authorities of higher institutions in Nigeria increase their fees at the expense of indigent
